Wayne N. Wanhanen was born at home in Lead on November 16, 1941, to Swen and Thea (Nelson) Wanhanen. He graduated from Lead High School in 1960, and married his high school sweetheart Kathryn Cone on April 1, 1961.
He was the proud dad of 2 daughters, Jodi and Julie, grandpa of Nicki Ryan, Tallea Gallegos, Sarah Shoop, and Wade Shoop, and great-grandpa to Myca Ryan, Winter Carl, and Aurora Carl.
Wayne began his career with Homestake Mining Co. while he was still in high school and retired as a Junior Metallurgist in 1994.
Wayne passed his deep love of nature and respect for God's beautiful creation on to his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. His interests included hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, and travel, especially to Canada and Alaska.
Wayne N. Wanhanen 75, of Deadwood, SD, died Friday, July 28, 2017, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Wayne is survived by his wife Kathryn; daughters, Jodi (Denny) Holzer and Julie (Scott) Shoop; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his brother, Bernie (Gay) Wanhanen; half-brothers, Ted White, Ron White and half-sister, Teresa Berry.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, numerous aunts & uncles and a granddaughter, Stacey Ryan.
Celebration of Life will be Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Christian Ministry Center of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, SD, with Pastor Peggy Hanson Officiating.
