Obituary

William "Bill" Dunbar, 86, Sturgis, and formerly of Dupree, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 14, 2014, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center following a long struggle with heart disease.

Bill was born in Faith, on April 13, 1928, to Lloyd and Daina (Higgins) Dunbar. After a couple of years of high school, Bill joined the Air Force in 1945. After serving his term he had numerous jobs, and in 1950 he found the love of his life, Doris Miller. Bill and Doris were married on April 13, 1950, in Rapid City in a church basement, with the preacher and his wife, a best man, and maid-of-honor. They went on a day trip to the Black Hills and then it was back to work. To this union five children were born, James "Jim" Dunbar, Sturgis, Vicky (Bernie) Fields, Sturgis, Debrah (Les) Starr, Sturgis, Bill Wayne (Jill) Dunbar, Mobridge, and Lora (John) Breth, Sturgis.

In 1954, Bill returned to the military, but this time with the Army. In his military career, he traveled extensively from Pole to Pole, all over Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Borneo, Wake Island, Fiji Island, American Samoa, Tahiti, Japan, Korea, Tasmania, and the Philippines. He spent four years in Taiwan, and three of those years his family was with him. He had two tours in Vietnam, four months in Greenland, and four years in Alaska with his family. It is hard to imagine how much of the world Bill saw, he was a world traveler.

Bill is survived by his children, two sisters, Jean Shupick, Sioux Falls, and Muriel Reid, Spearfish; four special sister-in-laws, Joan (Harold) Ross, Sturgis, Eileen Lewis, Belle Fourche, Joyce Collins, Spearfish, and Judy (JT) Stout, Dupree; thirteen grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; grandson, Marcus Kindsfater, brother-in-laws, Steve Shupick, Chad Reid, Jerry Lewis, Bill Collins, Mick Jung; and sister-in-law, Jane Jung.

A special thanks goes to the family and friends for their love and support. Also, a big thanks to the home health team, all the nurses, doctors, and health care providers, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center for the exceptional care Bill received.

A memorial has been established to the Fort Meade VA Hospice.
