Wylla M. Duncan, 88, Spearfish, SD, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish, SD.
Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2012, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and resume one hour prior to services at the church in Highmore on Saturday. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Highmore with Pastor Roger Day officiating. Burial will follow at the Highmore Cemetery.
Wylla was born July 11, 1923, at Huron, SD, to Charles H. and Bernice (Seaman) Lemon. She was raised in Onida, SD. She attended Aberdeen Normal and received her teaching certificate.
Wylla married Paul Duncan at Onida, SD, on November 23, 1944. She taught at a country school in Sully County before returning home to raise her children. She was a stay at home mom until the mid 1950's when she started working for the Sully Buttes Telephone Cooperative as a bookkeeper. She retired in 1989 after 35 years of service. She also was member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 69 years.
Wylla enjoyed travelling and saw all 50 states. She also cruised to Mexico. She enjoyed scrapbooking, writing in her journals, grandkids and great grandkids. She was active in her community and volunteered at the Highmore Senior Center. In 2005 she moved to Spearfish to be closer to family.
Survivors include her son Harley (Aileen) Duncan, Arlington, VA; one daughter Arleta Heckenlaible, Whitewood, SD; also 5 grandsons, Chris, Chad and Cory Heckenlaible, Paul and Max Duncan; 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one granddaughter, one great granddaughter, son in law and one brother.
A memorial has been established.
