Wyona Florence Sundstrom, 87, Newell, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at Aspen Grove Assisted Living.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with family present on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Wyona was born February 8, 1927, to Harvey G. and Stella W. (Green) Fitzgerald in Stoneville, SD. She grew up and attended school in the Enning-Stoneville area. She married Charles Samuel Sundstrom on June 29, 1943, in Charleston, SC, while he was in the Army. After his honorable discharge in 1945, the couple moved to Mud Butte where they ranched together for 30 years. Wyona drove a mail route for four years and then served as the Mud Butte Postmistress for four years while they owned the Mud Butte Store from 1967 through 1971. In 1972, the couple moved to Sturgis. Wyona then bought a beauty salon which she owned and managed. Wyona moved to Newell in 1998 where she enjoyed school activities with her grandchildren.

She was active in the community by giving her time as a 4-H leader and assistant leader for five years. She was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary # 2730, and a past member of the Rebekah Lodge 157 of Newell.

Wyona is survived by son, Gregory (Linda) Sundstrom, Ft. Collins, CO; daughters, LaVee (Rodney) DeGarlais, Sturgis, SD, and Reva (Douglas) Cox, Vale; grandchildren, Trista (Cody) Meininger, Denver, CO, Jolyn (Chad) Henneck, Denver, CO, Peggy (Brian) Martin, Fairfax Station, VA, Camylea Cox, Rapid City, SD, Samuel Sundstrom, Denver, CO, Vincent DeGarlais, Antigua, Guatemala, Thomas (Marisa) DeGarlais, West Haven, UT, Kyle (Desiree) Cox, Vale, SD, Gayle Cox, Rapid City, SD, and Tyler Cox, Rapid City, SD; eleven great-grandchildren; brother, Harvey Fitzgerald, Sturgis; sister, Mavis Symonds, Sturgis, and Audrae (Don) Howard, Sturgis; brother-in-law, Walter Sundstrom, Nisland, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Angela Fae Sundstrom and Marjorie Mae Sundstrom; and sister, Shirley Demerly.

A memorial has been established to the NVN Senior Center in Newell.
