IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Audrey
Hilton
September 11, 1934 – July 9, 2022
Audrey Hilton, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, left this world peacefully on July 9, 2022.
Audrey was born on September 11, 1934 in Lyman, Utah, to Glenn and Lela Chappell. The second of seven children, Audrey grew up riding horses and working with her family in rural Utah. In high school, she was active in 4H and was a rodeo queen. Audrey graduated from Wayne County High School in 1954 and moved to Salt Lake City, where she met her husband, Russell B. Hilton. Russ and Audrey married on August 17, 1956, while Russ was serving on active duty in the United States Air Force. During his twenty years of service, they moved eight times, living in such far-flung places as Montreal, Canada, San Antonio, Texas, and Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. During that time, they welcomed daughters, LeEllen, Allyson, and Sharon, as well as son, Ron to the family. As a tough-as-nails military spouse, Audrey handled business while her husband went to war in Vietnam on three separate occasions.
A professional homemaker and full-time parent, Audrey enjoyed spending time with her children and eventual grandchildren. She was an accomplished painter and gardener, and owned several small businesses, including Classic Silks Flowers and the legendary Grandma's Indian Tacos—a Sturgis Rally institution for over two decades. She was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had many deep and lifelong friendships both in and out of the church.
Audrey is preceded in death by her husband and one infant daughter, as well as her parents, Glenn and Lela Chappell; her sister, Gwen Stapley; and her brother, Sherman Lessley. She is survived by her children, LeEllen (Rick) McCartney, Allyson (Doug) Daane, Sharon (Tammy) Kienzle, Ronald (Mari) Hilton; as well as her sisters, Nellie Welch and Dianne Brush; her brothers, Alton Chappell, Marion Chappell, George Chappell, and David Valdez; thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
