Overholt

John H. Overholt was born October 25, 1927, to Ralph and Ellen (Clarin) Overholt in Creighton, SD. At a young age, they moved to Quinn, SD, and in 1941, the family moved to Rapid City.
On June 21, 1947, John married Marjorie A. Deseive. They spent over 53 years together until she passed in March of 2001. They resided in Rapid City for 4 years, then they and their 2-year-old son moved to Vancouver, WA, and returned to Rapid City in 1960 with their second son. John worked for the Pennington County Sheriff's Office for 6 years as a deputy. John then moved his family to Belle Fourche, where he was appointed Chief of Police, and maintained that position for 2 years. He was asked by the South Dakota Peace Officers Association to sell ads in the state Law Enforcement Magazine. In 1971, they moved to Sturgis and he continued to work for the South Dakota Peace Officers Association. After 27 years as a field representative and Executive Secretary, he resigned. John was elected to a Meade County commission seat, which he held for 14 years.
John, 91, of Sturgis, died on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
He is survived by his son, Gregory and Iris (Hammond) Overholt of Piedmont, SD; his daughter-in-law, Karen Overholt of Gillette, WY; his 4 grandchildren, John G. and Audra (Rippe) Overholt of Newell, SD, Jeremy and Kimberly (Bednarczyk) Overholt of Windsor, CO, and Aislinn and Cade Overholt, both of Gillette, WY; five great-grandchildren, Eric Hancock, serving in the U.S. Army, Flint Overholt of Newell, SD, and Gabrielle, Chloe, and Mason Overholt of Windsor, CO; and two brothers, DeWayne Overholt of Piedmont, SD, and Donald Overholt of Custer, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Ellen Overholt; his wife, Marjorie; his son, Rex Overholt; his brother, Gene Overholt; and his sister, Darlene Parker.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m.to 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 12, 2019, at First United Methodist Church in Sturgis with Pastor Jenene Earl officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.
