Lois Marie Lewis, 85, of Nisland, SD, died Wednesday, September 1, 2021, in her home.
She attended 1st grade at Coleman school in rural Hot Springs, 2 nd thru 12th grade in Hot Springs, SD. She professed in Garrett Hughes' Gospel Meeting in January of 1949.
Her first job, the summer of 1950, she cared for an elderly lady, cooking, cleaning, and keeping her company. In 1951, she worked at Red Owl grocery store in the meat department. She cut up chickens and waited on customers. From 1952 until 1955, she was a telephone operator in Hot Springs until her transfer to Sturgis Telephone Company.
She married Thomas Eugene (Gene) Lewis on November 10, 1955. They had five children, Everett, Tommy, Loren, Noreen, and Stanley.
Lois worked at Plumdone, a wholesale plumbing company, as a secretary and bookkeeper from late 1955 to early 1958 before moving to the farm where she raised her family. She then worked at Tri-County Locker in Newell for 9 years.
Lois appreciated the privilege of having Sunday fellowship meetings for 63 years in her home. She thoroughly enjoyed gardening, having company, and always had an open home.
Lois is survived by her children, Tom (Barb) Lewis, of Newell, Loren (Kris) Lewis, Noreen (Maynard) Yule, and Stanley (Karla) Lewis, all of Nisland, 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Etta Kosbau; husband, Thomas Eugene Lewis; and son, Everett Lewis, age 2.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at Belle Fourche Community Hall (512 6 th Ave) in Belle Fourche, SD, interment to follow at Hope Cemetery in Newell, SD.
