Obituary

Marlene Ann "Molly" Haivala was born on October 31, 1939, to Nick and Addeline Mackey at Buffalo, SD. She attended Lone Mountain and Buffalo elementary schools and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1958. She married Leonard (Lenny) Haivala on August 10, 1958, and they were married 49 years when Lenny passed away in 2007.

Marlene and Lenny had two sons, Bret and Bart. In their younger years, they traveled with a road construction crew and lived in a mobile trailer until the kids started school. They lived in Buffalo until the boys graduated high school. Marlene worked at the Western Café and was a secretary at the school. They moved to Dickinson, ND, where she worked as a bank teller. In 1983, they moved to Rapid City, SD, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Trimac Trucking until she retired. In 1985, they purchased their ranch in Piedmont, SD, where they ran cattle.

Marlene loved her grandkids and you could find her at nearly all of their activities, whether it was school or extracurricular activities. Her other loves were her flower gardens during the summer and her Christmas lights in the winter.

Marlene Ann Haivala, 77, Piedmont, died Thursday, June 8, 2017, at the Hospice House in

Rapid City.

Survivors include two sons, Bret Haivala, Piedmont, SD, and Bart (Beth) Haivala, Black Hawk, SD; two grandchildren, Heidi and Nickolas Haivala, Black Hawk, SD; one sister, Suzy (Don) Ostenson, Custer, SD; two brothers, Nick (Shirley) Mackey, Buffalo, SD, and Bob (Betsy) Mackey, Belle Fourche, SD; special friend, Carol Haivala, Rapid City, SD; plus numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lenny, and her parents.

Prayer services will be Monday, June 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont. Inurnment will follow at the Piedmont Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the local ALS Foundation.
